AYERS FAMILY CREST
Family's Official Crest displaying English / Irish Heritage
Family's Official Crest displaying English / Irish Heritage

THE AYERS
This Crest was given to a soldier named Truelove, who earlier had rescued William the Conqueror in the battle of Hastings in 1066. The Duke in return for his service told him "Hereafter the name Truelove to be call Eyer, because thou hast give me air I breathe." After the battle, the Duke found this soldier sorely wounded his leg & thigh struck off. The Duke Ordered him the upmost care, and after his recovery gave him land in Derbyshire with a Leg and Thigh cut off for his Crest. Thus began our Ayer's families of Derbyshire, England.

Giles Ayer born in 1572, and was the second son of Thomas & Elizabeth Ayer of England. He was the founder of Brickworth Castle, and the Irish branch of the Ayer, Eyer families. Giles was High Sheriff of Wilit in 1640.

INTRODUCTION
Greetings from my friend Betty. My screen name is " Mr. Showbiz " and I live in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. As a teenager, I worked in the Carolina Theatre as Usher, and Chief Usher during my last years of High School.

I was employed by the Winston-Salem Fire Department from May 1st, 1950 retiring December 31st, 1982 with the rank of Captain.

I have published books on Winston-Salem's Theatre History, and the Ayers Families Heritage. You will find the books displayed in our local library, in the Carolina Room.

My theatre history in this home site only covers the Wilby-Kincey Theatres, who were the largest owners and operators of movie houses in the South between 1930 & 1970.

DEDICATION
As an avid animal lover, I dedicate this home page to my little gray cat we called GC. He was my back yard companion, and would walk with me as I strolled around the back yard and sit beside me on our lawn benches. At night he would jump up on the arm of my chair or lay in my lap, and seem to understand every word I said. GC passed away in 1993, and I just didn't loose a cat, I lost my pal.

Crouse Apartments

A photo of the Crouse Apartment. A four family apartment, where mother & dad were living when I was born in 1927. This apartment was located in old Salem. Mother was a registered nurse, and dad worked in a clothing store. The apartment was across the street from Number Two fire Station which was located just South of the apartment. The township of Salem was founded by the Moravians, and merged with Winston in 1913. As I grew older, dad would carry me over to the fire station to visit the fireman. Now you can see in later life, why I became a Firefighter.

Calvary Moravian Church
Calvary Moravian Church
In 1722 a small group of members of the ancient Unitas Fratrum found refuge on the Saxony estate of count Ludwig Nichols Von Zinzendorf to escape persecution. By 1727 these refguees built a new settlement near Zinzendorf's estate that was called Herrnhut. During 1752, the Moravian's as they were called by now, came to America building a community in Pennsylvania known as Bethlehem. Under Augustus Gottlieb Spangenburg, twelve of the settlers mirgrated to North Carolina and built a small settlement in Western Piedmont during 1753, known as Bethabara. As it grew, others Moravian's moved Southward a few miles, and in 1772 built a larger town of Salem. Thus began the Moravian Home Church of Salem. Since the late 1800, the Ayers families of Salem, Winston, and in 1913 Winston-Salem have been members of Home Moravian Church,Trinity, Calvary, and Fairview Moravian Churches.

Fuzzy's School Years
Hanes Hi School
Hanes Hi School
During the Depression years, we were living in Richmond, Virginia. When the company my Dad worked for went out of business, He sent my mother and I to live with his Aunt in Salisbury, North Carolina. Then from Salisbury to Advance, North Carolina to live with mother's parents until Dad found work in Winston-Salem. With all the moving, I wasn't able to enter Gramer School until I was nearly 8 years old. 1st & 2nd grades were at the Old West End Gramer School on Broad Street. In the 3rd grade, I spent half of the year at Wiley Elementary, on North West Blvd. and the remaining years at North Elementary on Patterson Avenue. I entered John W. Hanes High School in 1943.

Further education was received from Draughn Business Collage, and Wake Forest University, Babcock School of Management.

Orchard Dinner
A group of Hanes High alumni keep in touch with a once-a-week get together over breakfast. Their plates were piled with pancakes and a heaping dose of nostalia. Where once they shared first kisses and crushes, the Hanes High School Breakfast Bunch now share memories of good times. Once a week, a group of alumni stage a minireunion at the Olde Orchard Diner on Old Salisbury Road. Each week, 45 to 80 people attend the reunion breakfast, and New people are always welcome.

John Stanfield a graduate of the class of 1945, started the get-togeather about three years ago. He maintains a list of over 100 alumni, that ranges from 1939 to the school's closing in 1963.

Please go to the Photo album for photos of the Hanes High Breakfast bunch.

Crystal Lake
To Fuzzy and several generations of High School students, Crystal Lake meant the place for a cool refreshing dip, or dancing to beach music on the Juke box with a favorite date on a summer afternoon.

Along with the Olympic-size swimming pool, which included an observation deck to watch swimming and diving, there was also a boating lake, and a dance hall.

The diving tower was said to be the highest in the state. In addition, in the pool area, there was a huge water wheel and a large fountain. Crystal Lake was built around 1923, and continuously operated until the 70's.

Carolina Theatre
Carolina Theatre
Carolina Theatre
In the last years of High School in 1946-47, my major was a business course, and I elected to take Distributive Education. This course required the student to take a job in the business world. In this course the student left school at lunch for work. I chose the Carolina Theatre as my job. On my first day of work, I was awed by the flashing lights on the marquee, and the vastness of the auditorium. Above the inter lobby there was a huge chandelier, two sets of marble stairways to the mezzanine. In the auditorium, there were two center isles, a left and right isles. At the stage area were two huge urns on both sides with large pipe organ tubes above. My uniform was a light blue jacket with dickey and bow tie; the pants were dark blue surge with a light blue stripe. Boy did we look sharp. The girls thought we did to. We were one big family, and on each Friday nights, after the last show, we had dances and parties back stage.

Wilby-Kincey Reunion
South Fork Recreation Center
South Fork Recreation Center
We began our theatre reunions during 1984 with a Champaign party for 49 former Carolina employees at the Stevens Center. This was the beginning of the 2nd year opening of the newly renovated Carolina Theatre to the new Stevens Center. In the years 1984 to 1988, we expanded our group to include all Wilby-Kincey Theatres in the city. In 1988 we also formerly organize, with dues, the Wilby-Kincey Theatre Association.

During the years from 1988 to 1994 we met in several location, and our yearly Reunions parties consist of dinners with movies, Bingo, Ventriquist Acts, Dances, Puppet shows, Western music, and Magic shows. In the high point of our organization we had 350 members. In 1994 we adopted South Fork Recreation Complex has our official home. After 19 years, we are down to about 118 active, and non active members.

Fuzzy & Nancy's Marriage
Nancy Elliott Ayers
Nancy Elliott Ayers
Fuzzy met Nancy Elliott while attending a Winston-Salem Twins Base Ball game at old South Side Ball Park in 1948. They began dating and were married on January 9, 1949 in Calvary Moravian Church Parsonage by Dr. Edmund Schwarze.

Nancy was the youngest daughter of Robert B. & Gladys Christopher Elliott, and was employed with the VA Adminstratived Office on West 4th Street. Fuzzy is the son of Paul T & Erma Taylor Ayers, and was employed with the City Of Winston-Salem, Accounting Department.

Not many young couples in 1949 owned a vehicle, and we didn't either. Nancy and I planned our honeymoon with a Greyhound bus trip to Richmond, Virginia, where we had accommodations in the honeymoon suite at the big John Marshall Hotel located there.

After the honeymoon, the couple resided at 1717 Angelo Steet in Winston-Salem. This union would produce three children, Paul Elliott, Martha Ann, and John Theon Ayers. The couple separated in 1963.

See photo Album for a group of early photos of Fuzzy & Nancy's marriage.

Winston-Salem Fire Department
Fireman Paul T. Ayers
Fireman Paul T. Ayers
Fuzzy entered the services of the Winston-Salem Fire Department on May 1, 1950, and this Recruit was assigned to Engine 6 in the Western section of Winston-Salem by Chief M.G Brown.

Engine 6 was under the command of long time Captain, John Ralph Allred and Lieutenant T. S. Hutchens. Ayers would spend the next 20 years with this unit.

In 1960, Ayers was elected by his station peers, and the Junior Chamber of Commerce, as " Fireman of the Year" He also was promoted to Sergeant in 1961.

During the latter part of 1970, Sergeant Ayers was transfered to Engine # 2, Head Quarter Company, on South Main & Cemetery Streets.

Engine 6, 1717 West Academy Street
During 1925, Winston-Salem's newest and most modern fire station was built on the corner of Academy Street and Gales Avenue. This station would cover the newly developed Ardmore section of the city, and the North Carolina Baptist Hospital.

The facility had a modern kitchen and bath, sitting room, officers quarters, locker room, a large dormitory that opened in to the Engine room, and a over head hose rack in the engine room. This was Fuzzy's 2nd home from 1950 to 1970. While station there, he was promoted to Sergeant. In 1996 Station 6 was demolished and replaced by a new two story building.

50's Firefighter
Engine Company Six operated with a Captain, Lieutenant, 2 Sergeants, 2 Engineers, and 7 firefighters, Working a 24 hour shift with one day on, and two days Off. On the third week, in rotation men would get a 3 day week end. This schedule gave us a 64 hour week.

Our fire fighting equipment was some what antique, with only filter type air mask. Bunker coat & helmet was only day time gear we used. The older men rated you as a fireman, on how much smoke you could take or eat. Thus the term " Smoke Eater." In the 50's, we used a 1939 Peter Pirsch open cab truck that would freeze you in the winter months, and drown you In a rain storm.

For the next 15 Years, we became one of two companies still using the open cab trucks. When in 1966 we were issued a new cab over Mack pumper with up dated equipment that included, self contain air packs, and full jump suits were required day or night

Fireman's Duties
Many activities would make up our 24 hour day, weekly schedule, such as house and equipment cleaning, home and business inspections, company area hydrant inspections, Monthly Hose change, and Class room & Drill Ground in service training.

ALARNS! Depending on how much equipment used to get the truck back in service, requiring as little as washing & drying the truck down, or to reload 1 1/2 or 2 1/2 inch dry hose, cleaning tools, ladders, etc. washing dirty hose, and pulling the 50' sections of wet hose on the hose rack to dry.

Each man was responsible for his food for the day, which included both lunch and supper. Sometimes if our schedule permitted, one man would cook for the group. I've learned over the years most firefighters are good cooks.

The officer would assign each man their position for the shift such as Engineer, 1st & 2nd nozzle man, hydrant man and hose men. Each man was trained to do his job and when the alarm went off, we were all business.

On the Liberty Street side, 1st floor has the Training Division Offices, storage, and the Fire Department Vehicle Maintenance Shop. In the latter part of 1970, Sergeant Ayers was re-assigned to this station.

Training Officer
Lieutenant Ayers
Lieutenant Ayers
In 1971, Sergeant Ayers was promoted to Lieutenant with the title of Assistant Training Officer. During the year 1973, Lieutenant Ayers assisted Public Safety Officials in forming a Public Safety Training Division " CDC " for both Police and Fire recruits and in service personnel.

This Training Division was made up of 2 Firemen and 2 Police Officers, Media Specialist, Secretary, and a Division Head, who reported to both Fire and Police Chiefs.

During this period, Public Safety Officials, Fire, and the Police Department organized a new concept called " Public Safety Officer " who was trained in both Police & Fire duties, and responded to police & fire calls within designated areas though out the city.

Lieutenant Ayers was assigned to the " Career Development Center " promoted to Captain, and was responsible for both Fire & Medical Training.

Le Chateau Supper Club
During 1962-63 a group of directors was formed, to convert the Le Chateau Supper Club into a privet coat & tie Key club. Details are not known at this time. Mr. Bob Fitshugh was retained as Manager. The complex was owned by G.G. Welch, founder of "Royal Cake Company," and was located at 3300 Starlight Drive. The club had a Restaurant for Dining and dancing. Dancing to a Juke Box in the mirrow room which overlooked the patio, and a large 75 x 250 Spring fed swimming pool with a multi-colored fountain.

On week ends, Gene Postlewaite, Ham Bolling, featuring Bill Milburn on Sax, and local bands would play for dinner dances & special parties. The club was open seven days a week. Through friends, Fuzzy became a member in 1963. There he met Donna Kaye Wood, his future wife.

During 1964 on Fuzzy and Donna's vacation trip to Florida, we sailed out of Miami on the Liner Calypso to the beautiful British Isle of Bimini. The Bahamas Islands gained independence from UK on July 10, 1973.

Bimini is a tiny island in the Bahamas, and is just 7 miles long and barely 700 feet wide at it's widest point. Lying just 50 miles east of the South Florida coast line, it is the Western most island in the Bahamas and the closest foreign island to the US mainland.

Our Entertainment
Tanglewood's Barn Theatre
Tanglewood's Barn Theatre
During the 60's,70's. and 80's, Fuzzy & Donna traveled the live theatre circuit in the Piedmont section of North Carolina. Weekly Brodway shows were performed at Tanglewood's Barn Theatre, between June and September, and the Little Theatre productions in Winston-Salem. There was monthly productions at The Charlotte Summer Theatre with Hollywood's top stars, and the Showboat Dinner Theatre presented Broadway shows in Greensboro.

In addition, we always attended the Moravian Christmas celebrations on Salem square and the Candle Tea. We also enjoyed the Nut Cracker at the Stevens Center. Several of these productions have long gone but, some events we continued to see through out our marriage.

The Ayers Dining & Dancing
During the early years of Fuzzy & Donna's marriage, Winston-Salem was flourish with plush night club and exciting restaurants. The Sams family led the way with Sam's Gourmet Steak house, Tavern-On-The-Green, and Sam's Gourmet Restaurant. Others were, Town Steak House, Kona Kai in the Seraton Motor Inn, and Staleys Steak House, Simos Barbecue Inn, and the Parkway Chelet.

As the old saying goes, " Time Waits for no Man " The plush clubs and restaurants begin to fade out, Music changed, New generations came on the scene, Disco clubs, and Rock Groups sprang up every where. In our later life, we begin to patronize old favorites. The K & W Cafeteria, Golden Corral, and the new Lone Star Steak House.

The Greenhouse
The Greenhouse
Early in the 1900's, the founder of R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company began construction on a series of buildings to self-support his 1,067 acre estate. The community would include dairy barns, a church, school, green house, central power plant, laundry, ice house, carriage sheds, blacksmith shop, smoke house, and cottages for his supervisory staff and their families. All the buildings were designed to resemble a quaint English country village.

Reynolda village is now the home of unique shops, restaurants and offices. The beautifully maintain grounds are open 365 days of the year to explore it's significance and charm. For many years, the Ayers Family has made Reynolda Village's Holiday open house an annual event.

When you stop to smell the roses, my best years of my early life was working at the big Carolina Theatre between 1946-48. To be a part of an organization that presented the Golden years of Hollywood movies to the public was really a thrill. I loved movies, Actors, and those wonderful cartoons. Tweety Bird, Sylvester, Porky Pig, and specially that cute little girl, Betty Boop that dance, and sung her way in to my heart. She was America's teen idol that's stayed with me all my life.

The firehouse lost all 15 of its men on duty on 9/11/2001, more than any other New York firehouse. In all, 343 city firefighters lost their lives in the collapse of the World Trade Center.

The tragedy was cause by the two highjacked airliners crashing into the Twin towers on September 11th, 2001.

In Honor of 9-11, 2001 for 2,997 people who gave their lives, in the fields of Pennsylvania, the Pentagon Building, and the New York Trade Center.

We see the sky line of New York City where powerful search lights at ground zero light up the sky where the two Trade Center buildings once stood.
